FAQ - Using UltraPlayer

Viewing and Editing File (Tag) Information

I have an MP3 file that displays one set of file information in UltraPlayer, and a different set of information in other players. Why?
This is a problem that comes up sometimes due to the existence of multiple standards for "tagging" MP3 files. There are two main types of tags that are stored in different parts of the MP3 file and contain different information. The older standard is plain old "ID3". The newer stander is "ID3 rev2". UltraPlayer looks for an "ID3 rev2" tag and if there is not one, displays the "ID3" tag. Some other players only display old-format "ID3" tags. Some files contain file information in both tags. When this is the case, UltraPlayer will display one set of information for the file, and a player that only reads old-format "ID3" tags will display a different set of information. UltraPlayer works this way because almost all of the new ripping and encoding software uses the newer "ID3 rev2" tags instead of the old "ID3" tags.
